Map Your Bag for Lower Scores
As we start looking ahead to the 2026 golf season, there’s one area of your game that can make an immediate and measurable difference to your scoring: knowing your true yardages and shot patterns.
This week’s tip is all about using the Map My Bag feature on Trackman, one of the most powerful (and often underused) tools available to you.
Why Map My Bag Matters
Most golfers think they know how far they hit each club. The reality? On-course performance often tells a different story.
Map My Bag gives you:
True carry distances (not guesses or “best-ever” numbers)
Dispersion patterns (how wide your shots really spread)
Club gapping insights (identifying overlaps or gaps in your set)
This is the kind of information that turns uncertainty into confidence, especially when you're standing over an approach shot.
How to Use Map My Bag (Step-by-Step)
When you come in for a session, here’s how to get the most out of it:
1. Warm Up Properly
Don’t jump straight into data collection. Spend 10-15 minutes loosening up and getting to your normal swing speed.
2. Start with Your Short Irons
Work from your wedges up through the bag. This helps establish a consistent baseline as fatigue gradually builds.
3. Hit Multiple Shots Per Club
Aim for 6-10 solid shots per club. Don’t worry about the occasional mishit, Trackman factors in averages, which is exactly what we want.
4. Focus on Normal Swings
This is key. Don’t try to “step on it” or impress the screen. We’re mapping your stock yardage, not your max.
5. Pay Attention to Carry, Not Total
Carry distance is what matters for approach shots, especially when playing into greens.
6. Review Your Dispersion
Look at the shot pattern for each club:
Are you consistently missing left or right?
Is your distance control tight or spread out?
This is just as important as how far the ball goes.
What's the real benefit?
Lower scores don’t just come from better swings, they come from better decisions.
When you know:
Your 7-iron carries 148 (not 160)
Your wedge dispersion is ±6 yards (not ±20)
Your miss is consistently right…
…you can start picking smarter targets, committing fully to shots, and avoiding costly mistakes.
Why Trackman beats the Driving Range for this
It’s important to understand that not all data is created equally. Especially when you’re trying to build a reliable yardage matrix.
Here’s why using TrackMan (indoors or on a controlled setup) is far superior to solutions like Toptracer or Trackman Range:
1. Neutral Conditions
On the range, wind, temperature, and even slope can influence ball flight and distance. With Trackman in a controlled environment, you’re getting consistent, repeatable data which is exactly what you need when mapping your bag.
2. Use Your Own Golf Ball
Range balls vary massively in quality, compression, and spin. They often fly shorter and spin less, giving you misleading numbers.
With Trackman, you can use your own ball so the data reflects your real on-course performance.
***NOTE: We just pelase ask at TeeClub that you use a ball clean from mud or marker pen to protect our screens from damage.***
3. True Dispersion Patterns
Range-based systems can be fun and useful, but they’re not designed to give you a precise, reliable dispersion map. TrackMan’s data allows you to see your actual shot pattern, helping you make smarter decisions on the course.
4. No “Range Swing Syndrome”
We’ve all done it, standing on a range trying to hit it further because there’s no consequence.
A structured TrackMan session encourages intentional, realistic swings, which leads to much more usable data.
5. Better Gapping Decisions
Because all the variables are controlled, any distance gaps or overlaps you see are real and not caused by wind, ball type, or inconsistent strikes from poor lies.
Get Ready for 2026
If you haven’t mapped your bag yet, now is the perfect time to do it.
Going into the new season with dialled-in numbers is one of the easiest ways to improve your performance without changing your swing.
